What does meditation have to do with marketing? Kind of a lot.
Meditation is the practice of focused thinking. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a few minutes a day of clearing out all the noise, and really focusing on what it is you want to think about.
The point of marketing is to tell people that you exist, in a way that compels them to do something about it. The clearer you are about why you exist, and why that person should care, and what exactly you want that person to do, the more likely you are to experience successful communication.
If you Google the top habits of successful people, you’ll find meditation is universally at the top of the list. So where do you start?
Start small. In the morning when you first wake up, before you check your phone for messages, do a quick meditation.
- Take 3 deep breaths. (Try breathing in for 4, holding for 4, and exhaling for 8)
- Practice gratitude. You can say something simple like ‘thank you for another day.’ Or you can get specific with something you are especially thankful for. Spend a moment thinking about how appreciative you are of whatever it is you are acknowledging.
- Set an intention. We all have to-do lists that are a million miles long. Try setting one intention for the day. “Today I will ____.”
- Stretch. Do a quick chest opener, touch your toes, move your body for a minute or two.
This whole practice shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes, and you will be well on your way to a more focused and intentional day.
